Today, Via Christi Health is the largest provider of health care services in Kansas.Position Summary:Via Christi is offering an exciting opportunity for a motivated Pediatric Clinical Pharmacist. This individual will be involved with the provision of pharmaceutical care services to pediatric patients at Via Christi. The pharmacy specialist will cover areas including NICU, PICU, and a general pediatric floor.

Their interdisciplinary work will help to improve the practice of evidence based medicine and to ensure optimal patient safety. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and presentation skills. Involvement in education of physicians, medical residents, pharmacists, pharmacy residents, pharmacy students, nurses, and other healthcare professionals is a key responsibility. Opportunities for adjunct faculty appointment and the ability to conduct clinical based research are available.Fulfills all duties and expectations of a licensed pharmacist, plus additional duties and responsibilities.

This position develops and possesses advanced knowledge and skills and serves as a resource for pharmacists, physicians, nurses and others within their area of expertise. Serves as a leader with respect to clinical pharmacy practice within the pharmacy and throughout the hospital and health-system. Collaborates closely with pharmacy leadership in the provision of expertise and focus for the hospital and healthcare professionals regarding medication therapy use and outcomes for a broad variety of patients. Mentors and raises the level of knowledge of Pharmacy staff regarding medication therapy management for patients.

Provides an expert level of medication information to physicians, nurses and others to assist in optimizing patient outcomes. Responsible for supporting policy and protocol development, formulary evaluations, drug use evaluation (DUE) and other activities of the Pharmacy & Therapeutics committee. Directly contributes to cost-effective utilization of drug therapy, both at the hospital level and at the patient level.Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions: Other duties may be assigned. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of the job.

Continually plans, develops, and implements improvements to service and quality of pharmaceutical care at the hospital and health-system. Identifies and implements initiatives which can improve quality and/or produce cost-effective and optimized medication therapy within the institutional mission. Provides informational and educational services to patients, physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other health care professionals pertaining to pharmaceutical care. Makes recommendations to Pharmacy, hospital and health-system Leadership on issues pertaining to medication therapy.

This could include therapeutic interchange programs, quality outcomes, formulary recommendations and pharmacoeconomic implications of formulary changes, direct patient care clinical pharmacy programs, etc. Demonstrates creativity and initiative in decision-making and problem-solving and acts as a resource for other staff members. Facilitates decision-making at the appropriate levels. Promotes positive morale and teamwork by interacting effectively with members of the Pharmacy, other service areas of the hospital, and customers.

Enhances Quality of Work life (QWL) efforts to positively contribute to a motivated, team oriented work force. Provides feedback to management/leadership staff regarding employee competency in clinical areas and topics, effectiveness at providing direct patient care services, etc. Assists management/leadership with employee education with regard to departmental policies and procedures, clinical and direct patient care programs, optimal use of medication therapy, and with conducting meetings to enhance communication, involvement and teamwork. Assists management with new pharmacist orientation, scheduling and individualizing new employee training, new employee and ongoing competency evaluation.

Assists pharmacy management/leadership and hospital leadership in maintaining compliance with applicable Joint Commission or other regulatory agency and professional standards, as well as state and federal laws / regulations. Works with management/leadership and other clinical pharmacy specialists in coordinating clinical pharmacy issues affecting the pharmacy, the hospital and/or the health-system. Maintains an active area of clinical practice, providing a high level of competent service to physicians, nurses, patients and other care givers. Serves as a role model for clinical staff pharmacists through this practice area, as well as a potential training site for residents, students, etc.

Participates in hospital committee activities as requested, providing expertise and thoroughly researched and well-documented background materials to support evidence-based decisions. Leads and participates in Formulary decisions and Drug Use Evaluation (DUE) as indicated. Prepares written background information, evaluates scientific literature, formulates proposals, and presents information and recommendations for medications, policies and protocols to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and other groups as needed. Works collaboratively and proactively with the pharmacy informatics team to implement formulary changes.

Works with the medical staff, nurses, pharmacy staff and others to streamline the medication use process and optimize patient safety. Assists in reviewing order sets, clinical protocols, etc, making evidence-based recommendations that will optimize medication use and cost-efficiency. Discusses appropriate changes with physicians. Responds to all customers (patients, residents, employees, physicians) and coworkers with respect and courtesy.

Maintains the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the expectations and duties of the licensed Clinical Staff Pharmacist position. Provides competency-based educational programs to pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and/or others within the hospital. Contributes written articles for publication in pharmacy newsletters and other communication methods. Assists in providing support to the pharmacy staff by being on-call on a rotating basis if needed.

Serves as a preceptor and mentor to pharmacy students, interns and residents. Works collaboratively with local ministry healthcare professional staff to plan and create successful pharmacy services. JOB REQUIREMENTS: Education and/or EXPERIENCE: Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree and completion of PGY-1 ASHP-accredited residency training (or equivalent) is required. Completion of PGY-2 ASHP-accredited residency training is strongly desired.

If PGY-1 trained only, the residency should have a pediatric focus. Previous clinical experience in area of specialty and/or recent experience in direct patient care activities and pharmacotherapy is desired. Board Certification in Pharmacotherapy (or another specialty area recognized by BPS) is desired. Technical Skills: Basic computer skills and knowledge required. Good working knowledge of standard Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Requires licensure as a registered pharmacist in the state of Kansas; eligibility for licensure is acceptable, but employee must obtain Kansas licensure within 90 days of employment. Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers offered by the American Heart Association or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer offered by the Red Cross within 30 days post date of hire.

ACLS within 6 months if required.
