Position Summary:
Provides technical assistance in the documentation and clarification of patient medication history lists under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, performs non-judgmental aspects of pharmacy practice. Assumes a leadership role in providing communication and direction among staff members of the team to facilitate the completion of daily work. Serves as a resource for staff and a preceptor for students and new staff on orientation as needed. Provides input into the educational needs of staff regarding process and workflow improvements. Exhibits strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills. Maintains excellent relationships with other departments. Interprets and follows policies, procedures, standards and regulations. Works effectively within and between each ministry.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Obtains, processes and enters patient medication historiesâ€"under the direct supervision of a pharmacistâ€"and completes full history documentation in computerized system

Clarifies information through communication with providers, patients and pharmacies

Performs special projects for the department

Works with multiple medication information and automation systems

Answers phone by the fourth ring properly (identifying department, stating name) and courteously

Uses appropriate judgment when answering and triaging phone calls

Follows all departmental policies and completes assigned duties in a timely manner

Completes competencies within assigned time frame

Designs and/or participates in staff development and education programs

Responsible for assessing and monitoring competency of Medication History Pharmacy Technicians

Responsible for assessing the Medication Reconciliation Program

Multi-lingual (Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Sign language, etc.) preferred

Ensures staffing coverage based on patient and ministry needs

Develops tools to improve systems for ongoing communication within and outside the department

May perform other duties as assigned or requested

Management Responsibilities:
This position has no management responsibilities.

Provides input to Pharmacy Managers regarding employee performance.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from four-year college or university required

Three (3) to five (5) years experience as a pharmacy technician required

Outpatient pharmacy experience preferred

Technical Skills:
Working knowledge of common medications, medical abbreviations, medical terminology, and disease states

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel)

Demonstrate ability to perform basic mathematical calculations

Maintain competency in central distribution functions essential to patient care operations (examples would include: Omni-link, Siemens Pharmacy Techniciffan functions, Omnicell technician distribution functions)

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Must be registered with the Kansas State Board of Pharmacy (http://www.accesskansas.org/pharmacy/)

Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) required.

Must obtain and maintain competency in Basic Life Support (BLS) within 6 months of employment

Must be independently mobile (e.g. vehicle) for travel between Via Christi Hospital.

Specific vision abilities that are required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Occasionally required to detect unusual odors that could indicate environmental issues such as smoke.
